Behind the Game: Avner's Drink

So it all started when I asked Rob (the DM at the time) the name of Avner's favorite drink. He told me he'd figure out a good name after the game session and we could just work it into the write up then. He did a Google search for "fantasy mixed drinks" or something like that and came across something that called itself a "Phoenix Down." I believe it's a reference to the Final Fantasy video game series, but I've never played it, so I'm not certain. Anyway, the description on the website said that it makes you feel "reborn."

I later looked it up and found out how to make it:

I don’t know the website, but this is exactly how it appeared there-

Phoenix Down
When you feel the need to get Reborn

  • 1 cl Triple Sec
  • 1 cl Tequila
  • 1 cl Orange Juice
  • ½ cl Grenadine

Directions:
Shake the first 3 ingredients. Then pour Grenadine into Shot.

The names “Triple Sec,” “Tequila” and “Grenadine” seemed too ‘real world.’ Even “orange juice” didn’t sound like it belonged in the context. So I decided to give them more descriptive names. Triple Sec is made from sun-dried orange skins, so I called it a “citric liquor.” Tequila is made from fermented extract from the blue agave plant, so I figured “agave” was a good name. What is Grenadine but a sweet red syrup? So, “Sweet Red.” And who knows if they have oranges in Rencrue, so I figured ‘citric juice’ would work just as well.

Lastly, Adameus doubles the ‘citric juice’ content. I did this for two reasons. First, when my wife and I were experimenting with the mixture, we both felt that the original recipe was too strong. Secondly, I figured Adameus would want to avoid getting Avner drunk. A drink to settle his nerves is one thing, but I’m guessing he’s a mean drunk.

I was surprised when I first mixed this drink, as described above, to discover that the Grenadine goes right to the bottom creating a two-tone effect. It really does look like flames.

Addendum: Much to my embarrassment, this drink is no exotic fantasy drink … it's a Tequila Sunrise. Show's how well I know my mixed drinks.
