Harliss Javell

Harliss is a bold beauty with raven black hair that flows like the deepest shade of midnight against her deeply tanned skin. She wears tight leather armour studded with fire opals and pearls. In combat she wields a curved rapier and dagger in a blinding display of swordplay.

The party rescued Harliss from combat with several Savagely corrupted members of her crew. She told them how Vanthus betrayed her and attempted to steal a Shadow Pearl, only to set it off. The resulting Savage Tide washed over the area and transformed most every man, fish, and animal into horrific monsters. She and a few others escaped into nearby caves but were cut down one by one until only she remained.

Harliss responded positively to the party, partly for having helped her, but partly because Idae spoke her language, so to speak. She spilled the beans on Vanthus’s future plans and likely location, confessed that she’d sent a squad of bullywug hitmen to the Vanthus estate, and gave them a message to call off her first officer, plus her earring as proof the message was legitimate.

Things took a turn for the worse when Viselys attempted to arrest Harliss, but she proved more than a match for them, humiliating Viselys and Saris. Idae, however, somewhat smoothed her ruffled feathers in parting.

When last seen, she was rigging a boat launch with a sail and heading out to sea.

After leaving Kraken's Cove, Harliss was filled with rage at the Crimson Fleet. They had not fully divulged to her the dangers of transporting shadow pearls, and she blamed them for the death of her crew and her friends at Kraken's Cove. As she traveled on foot along the coast away from Sasserine, the need for revenge against the Crimson Fleet grew into an obsession. Eventually, she came to the secluded beach that Vanthus had used to stage his arrival in the region. He left behind several skifls (he'd lost some
of his men in the chaos at Kraken's Cove and didn't have enough left to return all of the skiffs to his ship after he fled the area) one of which Harliss claimed. She eventually made her way to a Scarlet Brotherhood fort and managed to fast talk her way onto a larger ship bound for civilization. Yet her true goal remained Scuttlecove - after witnessing what one shadow pearl was capable of, and knowing that the Crimson Fleet had more of them, she was curious to find out what they were up to.

It took several months, but eventually Harliss arrived in the depraved city. She began investigating the Crimson Fleet, and after several close calls with Dire Hunger monks and bar-lgura press gangs, she attracted the attention of a group of rebels who called themselves the Protectorate.

With the Protectorate's support, Harliss learned much about the fleet, add came close to discovering the location of their secret hideout. While spying on a band of Crimson Fleet pirates on a ship visiting Scuttlecove, she overheard the news that Vanthus Vanderboren had returned from the dead and brought his captured sister to the base. The news shocked Harliss, who had thought she'd seen the last of the Vanderborens, and also made her recall the adventurers she'd met back in Kraken's Cove. If they were still allied with Lavinia, perhaps they would assist in realizing her revenge.

Harliss' decision to contact the heroes sent her in search of someone capable of such magic. Her contacts at the Protectorate couldn't help her directly, but they did point her to one of their more sinister allies, a half fiend nymph named Tyralandi. With her aid and the use of a scroll of dream, Harliss saught to contact Idae, with whom she was most taken. When the spell failed, she tried the leader of the group, Viselys. Through the dream, she revealed what she knew about Vanthus and bade him to meet ehr at Red Foam Whaling in Scuttlecove.

Only a few days before the heroes arrived in Scuttlecove, Seventh Coil spies tracked Harliss to Red Foam Whaling. In a brutal raid, they murdered all ten Protectorate members who were staying there and captured Harliss, whom they turned over to the harpies at The Birdcage to be interrogated. The harpies worked on her for a few days and managed to extract a few tantalizing bits of information, including the fact that she's joined the Protectorate and recently contacted "allies" to aid her in a plan she had involving the Crimson Fleet. Descriptions of these allies (as she remembered them) were sent on to the Leech, but the harpies hadn't managed to get much more from the strong-willed woman before she was ultimately rescued by her alies, Visely and his party.
